About the player
Twelve goals in 26 matches across the 2023 MLS Next Pro season. Tavares had arrived at Crown Legacy FC, the club's affiliate side, in January 2023 as a free agent, weeks after his contract at G.D. Estoril Praia was terminated. By February 2024 he was promoted to the first team.
In July 2025 he left on a free transfer for NK Varaždin, with Charlotte retaining a 20% sell-on clause.
The route to that point ran through some of Portugal's better-known academies. He started in the youth system at S.L. Benfica, spent a loan spell at C.F. Os Belenenses, then joined the Vitória Guimarães academy. His senior football began there in 2021, split between the B side and the first team, before a free transfer to Estoril in August 2022 that lasted only until the new year.
Born in Lisbon, Tavares plays for Cape Verde. His senior debut came on 28 March 2022, a friendly against San Marino, when he came on in the 63rd minute of a 2-0 win. That remains his only cap.
At 191 cm, though his record so far is that of a forward whose numbers have moved with the level: prolific in MLS Next Pro. Varaždin is the first club of his career outside Portugal and the United States.
