Giannis Anestis

G iannis Anestis worked his way up through the Panionios academy and into the first team, where he stayed until 2014, making 17 Super League appearances along the way.

Anestis won the Greek second-division title with AEK Athens in 2014–15, added the Greek Cup in 2015–16, and was part of the squad that took the league championship in 2017–18. In between, a European night against AC Milan brought a personal high point: a performance in October 2017 strong enough to earn him a place in that week's UEFA Europa League Team of the Week. He went on to make 59 league appearances for AEK.

A move to Israel with Hapoel Be'er Sheva in the summer of 2018 did not work out. Anestis left having played only in the Champions League qualifiers against Dinamo Zagreb, without a single league game to his name.

Signing for IFK Göteborg that November, he became a regular fixture, played 88 league matches and lifted the Swedish Cup in 2019–20, staying with the club until 2021.

A run of shorter spells followed: back to Greece with Panetolikos, then two stops in Cyprus at Karmiotissa and AEL Limassol. In October 2024, Anestis joined Romanian side FC Botoșani, where he now wears the number 99 shirt and has made 65 appearances.
