Johan Bocanegra has worn ten different shirts in eight years of Colombian football.
The following years read as a tour of the Colombian second and first divisions — Cortuluá, Deportivo Pereira, Atlético Bucaramanga. At Pereira in 2023 he was a near-ever-present, making 46 appearances, while his stay at Bucaramanga the following year lasted just four matches.
In 2025 Bocanegra left Colombia for the first time, joining Bolivia's Nacional Potosí, though the spell was brief. He returned home within the year to sign for Boyacá Chicó, where he scored four goals in 18 appearances, his best return in front of goal since his debut season with Barranquilla FC back in 2017.
