The club took shape on 26 March 1971, wearing red and black from the start — colours that earned it the nickname Rojinegro.

The name fits a club whose identity was built in Serie B rather than the top flight. Técnico Universitario has won the second division six times — in 1977, 1981, 1999, 2002, 2011 and 2017.

The Copa Ecuador has offered more recent tests of that pattern. In 2024, Técnico Universitario knocked out Emelec on penalties before falling to Universidad Católica in the quarter-finals.
