That changed in 2020, in a final settled on penalties against LDU Quito. Delfín had never won the Ecuadorian championship before; they held their nerve from the spot and took it.

The same year brought the Copa Libertadores group stage, where the draw put them alongside Santos, Defensa y Justicia and Olimpia. Since then the club has kept a foothold in CONMEBOL competition, with Copa Sudamericana ties including a meeting with Real Tomayapo in 2024.

Home is the Estadio Jocay , a municipal ground at the corner of Avenida 113 and Calle 307, rebuilt across 2019 and 2020 and now holding 21,000.

The fixture that matters most, though, does not involve Quito or Guayaquil.
