About the player
Ito made his professional start at Ventforet Kofu after leaving Kanagawa University, before a move to Kashiwa Reysol opened the door to Europe. Genk brought him in on loan in January 2019 with an option to buy. It was a productive spell: Ito won the Belgian First Division A title, the Belgian Cup and the Belgian Super Cup with Genk, and by 2021–22 he had established himself as the league's top assist provider, also picking up the Goal of the Season award and a place in the Team of the Season.
That form earned him a move to Stade de Reims in 2022 for a fee in the region of €10 million. Across his club career he has scored in the J1 League, the Belgian Pro League and Ligue 1.
On the international stage, Ito has been a regular for Japan since his debut in 2017. He was part of the squad that finished runners-up at the 2019 Asian Cup, and played at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as Japan reached the Round of 16. He was named again for the 2026 World Cup, where Japan advanced through the group stage before losing to Brazil in the Round of 32.
