About the player
Kelsey Owusu moved to Saarbrücken on a free transfer this July, arriving from Rot-Weiss Essen after two years in which the midfielder went from Schalke's youth ranks to regular football in the 3. Liga. Born in Hamburg to German and Ghanaian parents, he came through the city's own clubs, starting at Horner TV before joining USC Paloma and then Hamburger SV, where he stayed through the youth system for seven years and also featured for the reserve side in the Regionalliga Nord.
A switch to Schalke 04 in 2023 put him in one of the country's biggest academies, and he made his mark in the DFB-Junioren-Pokal that season: his goal levelled the final at 3-2 against 1. FC Köln, and he finished the campaign as Schalke's top scorer in the competition, even though the team went on to lose in extra time.
His contract at Schalke expired in 2024, and he joined Rot-Weiss Essen, where he settled into regular senior football. The move paid off with the Niederrheinpokal in 2025, and this season he was among the scorers in the club's 10-0 win over SV Solingen in the cup, netting a hat-trick. Owusu is comfortable using both feet, a trait that has been noted as one of his defining attributes as a midfielder, and it is that versatility he now takes into his first season at Saarbrücken.
