About the player
Hearts moved for Rogers Mato once already before they got their man: an initial £300,000 bid was turned down by FK Vardar, and it took a loan spell before the Ugandan forward's move to Tynecastle was made permanent.
Mato's route there was not straightforward. He came through Proline FC in Uganda before a switch to KCCA, where his form was rewarded with a place in the Ugandan Premier League's Best Eleven for the 2022/23 season. A move to Turkey with Şanlıurfaspor followed, but he left after only five appearances. It was the subsequent switch to FK AP Brera Strumica, and then to Vardar, that reset his career.
Internationally, Mato has been a regular for Uganda since making his senior debut against Iceland in January 2022, a match that finished 1–1. He has gone on to earn 41 caps and score 8 goals for his country. Hearts will now be hoping the goalscoring touch that made him a wanted man in North Macedonia travels with him to Scotland.
