About the player
Berghuis came through the FC Twente academy and made his senior debut in January 2011. A transfer to Watford followed, but it was a loan back to the Netherlands, at Feyenoord, that reshaped his career: he helped the Rotterdam club to the Eredivisie title in his first season there and signed permanently soon after.
He finished as the league's top scorer in 2019–20 and was named in the Eredivisie Team of the Year.
He went on to win back-to-back Eredivisie titles with Ajax. In 2023 he apologised after punching a fan outside the stadium following a match against FC Twente, saying the fan had directed a racist slur at his teammate Brian Brobbey.
Berghuis made his debut for the Netherlands in May 2016 against the Republic of Ireland and has since earned 46 caps.
