The club started out in 1958 as Shabab Al-Mubarraz, formed by a group of local businessmen, and took the name Al-Fateh eleven years later, when it registered formally with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and settled on green, white and blue.

Then came 2012/13. Al-Fateh won the Saudi Professional League that season, the only league title in its history, and became the first club from outside Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam to do it since 1987. Élton, the Brazilian midfielder, was named the league's best player after ten assists and eleven goals of his own, while Doris Fuakumputu top-scored with seventeen. A few months later the club beat Al-Ittihad 3-2 after extra time to lift the inaugural Saudi Super Cup, a trophy that had never been contested before.

Hamdan Al-Hamdan, a product of the club's own academy, captained that side and went on to play for the national team. Mohammed Al-Fuhaid, another academy graduate, holds the appearance record at the club with 345 league games.

Derby games against Al-Hazem, from nearby Ar Rass, are known in the region as the Al-Ahsa Derby.
