«Burgundy Mountain»
Rustaq lies where the Hajar mountains fold down into the Batinah plain, and the town's terrain gave the football club both its colour and its name before it gave it any titles.
The club began life in 1986 as Al-Shabab. It topped the First Division play-off table with 19 points and closed out the campaign with a 1–0 win over Bowsher Club, sealing the title with a game still to spare and reaching the Oman Professional League for the first time. Mustafa Suwaib, the coach that year, was named the division's best; Essam Al-Barahi took the equivalent player award.
Al-Rustaq's fixture with Al-Musannah, both clubs based in the South Batinah Governorate, is known locally as the Southern Batinah Derby, with Ibri and Al-Rusain making up the rest of its regional rivalries.
