Al Shahaniya SC

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Eid Al Thani set the club up in 1996 to carry forward what an amateur side called Al Nasr SC had started back in 1951, and the new outfit kept that name at first. It moved its base from Al Jemailiya to the town of Al-Shahaniya in 2001, and three years later took the town's name for its own, a change meant to tie the club more plainly to the region it represented.

Al-Mutaniq, the Spiders, have spent most of their history working their way up from and back down to the Qatari Second Division rather than settling into the top flight. They won that division in 2017–18 and finished runners-up in it four more times, a pattern of near-misses that only broke in May 2024, when they beat Al Markhiya in a promotion playoff to return to the Qatar Stars League. Weeks earlier they had already gone close in the QFA Cup, losing the final to Al Bidda on penalties. The club has never taken the Qatar Stars League title or the Emir Cup.

Marc Muniesa, who came through Barcelona's youth system, captains the side. The squad has also carried Nigel de Jong and Ashkan Dejagah at various points.

Al Shahaniya has no derby fixed by geography or history in the way older Qatari clubs do, but Al Markhiya and Al Shamal have become the closest thing to it, opponents met repeatedly at the moments that decided promotion, including that playoff in 2024.
