Al Wakrah

South of Doha, Al Wakrah has long carried the trade of the sea into its identity, and the football club still wears that inheritance in one of its nicknames, Al-Nawakhdha — the Captains. The other nickname, The Blue Wave, sits alongside it, though the club plays in yellow and blue rather than blue alone.

Registered in 1956 as Al Wakrah Youth Club before the 1959 date the club now marks as its founding, the side built its best years around the turn of the millennium, taking the Qatar Stars League in 1998–99 and again in 2000–01. The Qatar Cup came the same first year, in 1999, and Al Wakrah did not add to it until 2024, a gap between the club's first and second cup wins.

During the 2022 World Cup, Al Wakrah's players found themselves away from home, with the newly built Al-Janoub Stadium given over to the tournament and the club shifted elsewhere for its own fixtures. They have since returned to the smaller Saoud bin Abdulrahman Stadium.

Al-Gharafa provides the fixture that matters most, the South Doha Derby, and it is against that name that Al Wakrah's supporters measure a season more than any other.
