AS Kigali

AS Kigali sit in Rwanda's Primus National League as a club that has made a habit of finishing in the top half since the late 2010s without ever lifting the title itself, a competition long held by APR FC, Rayon Sports and Kiyovu Sports.

What sets the club apart is who runs it: AS Kigali is owned and funded by the City of Kigali municipality rather than a corporation or the army, and the nickname Abanyamujyi — "The Citizens" — comes straight from that arrangement. The club was founded in 1999 and plays in green and yellow.

Where the league table has stayed out of reach, the cup competitions have not. AS Kigali have won the Rwanda Peace Cup three times, in 2013, 2019 and 2022, and added the Rwanda Super Cup in 2013 and again in 2022. The nearest miss came in the 2019 Super Cup final, lost to Rayon Sports on penalties.

Continental football has been a harder road. In the 2020/21 CAF Confederation Cup, AS Kigali reached the final preliminary round before Tunisia's CS Sfaxien ended the run. Eric Nshimiyimana has overseen much of this era from the touchline, taking charge from 2014 to 2018 and returning in 2019, while midfielder Haruna Niyonzima captained the side across two spells before leaving for Libyan football.

Matches against APR FC carry weight in Kigali without a settled name attached to them — that label belongs to APR against Rayon Sports — but the fixture has repeatedly shaped where the title ends up.

The club's women's side, founded in 2008, has been the more dominant half of AS Kigali: ten league titles in a row between 2009 and 2018.
