Gicumbi

Byumba, seat of Gicumbi District in northern Rwanda, has had its football represented in the top flight by Gicumbi FC since the club arrived in the Rwanda Premier League as a newcomer in the 2013/14 season. Stade Gicumbi, where they play, holds 6,000.

Staying up has proved harder than getting there. Gicumbi went down at the end of 2017/18 and came back, but the pattern repeated in 2019/20, when the Rwanda Football Federation cut the season short because of the pandemic and ruled them relegated anyway: they had finished bottom with 15 points, and their appeal against the decision was turned down. A mass departure of players followed, and the club rebuilt under coach Rafiki Nshimiyimana. It bought them time rather than security — Gicumbi were relegated again in 2022, this time into the Second Division, and neither the Premier League title nor the Rwanda Cup has ever come their way.

The one name from Gicumbi's ranks to travel further belongs to Antoine Ndayishimiye, called into Rwanda's under-23 squad in 2015 while still on the club's books, before moves to Police FC and AS Kigali. Eric Tuyishimire arrived from the other direction, joining in August 2021 after spells at APR FC and Rayon Sports, though his time at Gicumbi ended in a dispute over his release rather than on the pitch.
