Mukura

Canisius Nshimiyimana spent his whole career in yellow and black, went to the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations from the Mukura back line, and came home to coach the club he had defended for so long.

The club itself began as Loisires in the 1930s, set up under Father Litjens and Sir Reisidorif, turned into Victoria FC in the following decade, then faded out in 1959. Independence and the creation of Commune Mukura brought it back under its present name in May 1963.

The 2018 vintage, built by president Olivier Mugabo Nizeyimana and coach Francis Haringingo, arrived only a year after Mukura had been playing in the second division, having dropped out of the top flight in 2016. That double put them into the CAF Confederation Cup, where they reached the play-off round before Al-Hilal Club Omdurman ended the run.

Butare, now officially known as Huye, gives its name to the derby that matters most locally, against Amagaju FC.
