Asyut Petroleum

Ahmed Ali had two seasons at Asyut Petroleum before he left for Ismaily and Zamalek and, eventually, ten caps for Egypt and a place in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations squad. He is the clearest sign of what the club has usually been for Asyut: a place strikers pass through on the way somewhere bigger, rather than one they stay to build around.

The club was set up in 1990 under the ownership of the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum, which gave it both its name and its identity as a state-backed side rather than a community one. It plays as Petrol Asyout, and its closest matches, against Asyut Cement and Dayrout, are fought out as the Asyut Derby, the fixture that matters most in the city regardless of the division either side happens to be in.

Cup runs have been the club's main source of attention nationally. Asyut Petroleum reached the semi-finals of the Egypt Cup in 2006–07, losing to Zamalek, then went one better in 2008–09, beating their way to the final only to lose it after having already knocked out opponents on the way, including a semi-final defeat of Haras El Hodoud in the same campaign's earlier record. That runners-up finish remains the one major honour in the club's history.

League form has mattered less than cup form for long stretches. In May 2026 the club finished as runners-up in the Egyptian Second Division A and went up to the Egyptian Premier League, its first appearance in the top flight in sixteen years. The Asyut University Stadium, the club's home ground since its foundation, will host top-division football again for the first time since that gap began.
