Atletico Independiente

Siguatepeque sits in the highlands of Comayagua, and the football club that carries its name has spent most of its life as the department's main entry in the national game. Club Atlético Independiente de Siguatepeque was set up on 12 October 1960, and it took two decades before the side reached the top flight.

Once there, it stayed. Independiente played in the Liga Nacional from 1980 to 2017 — ended not by relegation on the pitch but by an expulsion after the club failed to turn up for a fixture.

What followed was a long stretch in the Liga de Ascenso, and a familiar pattern: close, then not close enough. The club reached second-division finals in 1984, in 1995-96, and twice more in the 2010s without lifting the overall title. That changed in 2025, when Independiente took the Clausura, beating Arsenal SAO 3-2 on aggregate in the final. Even then the reward was partial — the Clausura crown on its own does not carry a side up, only a win in the Finalísima against the Apertura champions does.

The route back opened elsewhere. In June 2026 the club was invited into the Liga Nacional as the twelfth team for the 2026-27 season.

Home matches are played at the Roberto Martínez Ávila Stadium, where the side turns out in red shirts and black shorts, reversing the two on the road.
