«Sinfonía Verde»
The club exists because a merchant's order went wrong. Eloy Montes wanted a football for a group he was putting together in his shop in San Pedro Sula and wrote to Montgomery Ward in Chicago; the parcel that arrived held an American football, branded Marathon. Montes kept the name for the team he founded on 25 November 1925, alongside Chris Sabillón, Kevin Sánchez, Gerardo Fonseca and others at that first meeting. It has never changed since, and the club has never merged with another.
Nine league titles follow, and one team supplies most of the weight behind them: the 1979–80 side, nicknamed Sinfonía Verde, the Green Symphony, a name that has stuck to the club as a whole ever since. Roberto Bailey scored the goals that settled that final, and he went to the 1982 World Cup with Honduras alongside teammates Celso Güity and Jorge Alberto Bueso, the midfielder who ran that title-winning side. Marathón added titles in 1985–86, then a run through the 2000s — Clausura 2002, Clausura 2003, Apertura 2004, Apertura 2007, Apertura 2008 and Apertura 2009 — before the most recent, Clausura 2018. Pompilio Cacho stands apart from that stretch: over two spells between 1995 and 2006 he scored 56 league goals, was top scorer in Clausura 2000–01 and won the title twice more, in Clausura 2001–02 and Clausura 2002–03.
Two Honduran Cups, 1994 and 2017, and the 2019 Honduran Supercup sit alongside the league record. Home games are played at Estadio Yankel Rosenthal, which holds 15,000; European and CONCACAF fixtures move to the larger Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano.
