The **Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Honduras** sits at the top of the local football pyramid, operating under the auspices of the Honduran Football Federation. Founded in 1964 and launching its first professional campaign in 1965–66, the competition is distinct in the region for the absolute monopoly of its "Big Four"—Olimpia, Motagua, Real España, and Marathón—who have won every professional title since inception. This dominance contrasts sharply with neighbouring leagues like Guatemala's or El Salvador's, where title distribution is more fragmented.

The season structure divides play into two tournaments: the Apertura, running from July to December, and the Clausura, spanning January to May. Each tournament follows a single round-robin format where teams play each other twice, home and away. The current lineup features 11 clubs, a temporary adjustment following the return of C.D. Platense, though the league typically operates with 10 teams. After the regular phase, the top six teams from the aggregate standings advance to the playoffs. These playoffs are structured into two triangular groups known as Triangulares Semifinales, with the winners of these groups meeting in a two-legged grand final to determine the tournament champion.

Promotion and relegation operate on a one-up, one-down basis. The team with the lowest points in the aggregate table, combining results from both the Apertura and Clausura, is relegated to the second tier, the Liga de Ascenso. In the event of a tie for relegation spots, a playoff is held to decide the outcome. Conversely, the champion of the Liga de Ascenso earns promotion to the top flight. Since 2013, promotion from the second division has been decided by a single playoff match between the winners of the Apertura and Clausura tournaments of the lower league, unless one team wins both, in which case promotion is automatic. C.D. Olimpia remains the most successful club in the league's history with 40 titles.
