Estrella Roja

Estadio Marcelo Tinoco holds 5,000 people, a ground named for a goalkeeper who played there in the 1960s. Danlí, the city around it, is in the Honduran department of El Paraíso, and Estrella Roja is the club that grew out of it after Salvador Ávila set it up in 1984.

For years that meant the Liga Mayor, the third tier, where a place in the higher divisions was a distant idea rather than a plan. The 2016 win over Gremio in the Centro Sur Oriente regional tournament, settled 4-3 on aggregate, was the step that got Estrella Roja out of it and into the Liga de Ascenso.

The club stayed there until 2025, when it won the Apertura, beating Real Sociedad 2-0 on aggregate to reach the promotion final against CD Hondupino — a club from Trojes, in the same department, and the closest thing Estrella Roja has to a rival. Estrella Roja won that final 4-1, goals coming from Edilson Gómez and Nahuel Luna among others, and with it took the first promotion to the Liga Nacional in the club's history.

In August 2026, in the club's first match in Honduran football's top flight, against Motagua, Reiniery Mayorquín scored the goal that put Estrella Roja on the scoresheet in the Liga Nacional for the first time.

It is a long way from the ground where it started, the 5,000-seat stadium in Danlí named after a goalkeeper from the 1960s.
