Chinese Taipei U20

Third place at the 1966 AFC Youth Championship remains the high point for Chinese Taipei's under-20 side, earned on home ground when a goalless draw with Thailand left the two sharing the bronze. That tournament belonged to a stretch, from 1961 through 1972, when the team missed the finals only once.

The side draws its players from university football rather than any academy system — National Taiwan University of Physical Education has supplied a steady stream of them, alongside local sides such as Taipower. Chen Po-liang came through this route before becoming the senior team's all-time leading scorer and most capped player, with a professional career that took him to clubs in China and Hong Kong. Goalkeeper Lu Kun-chi followed a rarer path, moving on to Grulla Morioka in Japan.

A sixteen-year spell in the Oceania Football Confederation, between 1976 and 2016, produced the team's other notable finish: third at the 1988 OFC U-19 Championship, with fourth-place results either side of it in 1985 and 1986. Since returning to Asian competition, the record has been thinner — a single finals appearance, in 2018.

Hong Kong U-20 remains the fixture that matters most, with meetings between the two frequently deciding qualification for the EAFF U-20 Championship; Macau and Cambodia turn up as regular opponents lower down the qualifying groups. Home matches for recent AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers, including the September 2024 round for the 2025 edition, have been played at Fu Jen Catholic University Stadium in New Taipei City, a ground that holds around 3,000 and can be pushed to 5,250 when needed. The side wears the same crest as the senior team and goes by "Blue Wings."
