Chur

The story of promotion in 1991 is remembered less for the result than for a plastic bottle: coach Leo Schumacher hurled one onto the ice mid-match, furious after a heavy defeat in the promotion round, and Chur went on to win anyway and go up. That flash of temper sits well with a club that has spent most of its life climbing back to somewhere it had already been.

Founded in 1933, Chur first reached the National League A in 1984, the third team from Graubünden to do so after Arosa and Davos, and returned in 1986 and again in 1991. Two National League B titles followed in 1998–99 and 1999–00, but the club could not hold its footing: relegation in 2002 over licensing and finances, then bankruptcy in 2008, which forced a full withdrawal from professional hockey. For sixteen years the team played on in the amateur ranks, first as EHC Chur Capricorns, reverting to EHC Chur in 2015. The MyHockey League title in 2023–24 finally sent them back up to the Swiss League.

The nickname Steinböcke, the alpine ibex of the Graubünden coat of arms, has outlasted every rebrand the club went through. So has the fixture against Arosa, the Graubünden-Derby, the region's oldest hockey grudge match. Nino Niederreiter, born in Chur and now a shareholder, and Enzo Corvi, who made it to Davos in the National League and is also a shareholder, have taken the club's youth programme in hand since returning. Goaltender Leonardo Genoni joined as both player and shareholder in 2024.

A semi-final finish in the Swiss Cup in 2024–25 was the closest the club has come to a trophy since MyHockey League triumph.
