«The Darts»
The Darts had first left in the early 1990s, when the club fell into financial trouble and pulled out of the Southern League altogether; it survived only because its own supporters stepped in to keep it going.
The club traces back to 1888, formed by members of the Dartford Working Men's Club, and its early decades brought a run of Southern League titles either side of the Second World War, followed by two more in the 1970s and 1980s. The best-remembered season, though, came earlier still: in 1935–36 and again the following year, Dartford reached the Third Round Proper of the FA Cup, the first non-League side ever to do so. The nearest they came to a major final was in 1974, when they lost the FA Trophy final to Morecambe.
Among those who passed through was Andy Hessenthaler, a name still tied to the club's better non-League years.
Matches against Welling United still carry the old North Kent derby weight, decided as much on nerve as on form.
