For over a decade, the football club now based in the Doma quarter of Gombe played under the name AS Monaco. The side kept that identity from its founding in 1994 until 2007, when it dropped the French club's name for its own neighbourhood, becoming Doma, and later Doma United.

The rivalry with Gombe United has carried significant weight. Doma United took the Gombe State FA Cup off their neighbours in 2017 and again in 2018, then lost the 2019 final to the same opponents.

The route into Nigeria's top flight came late and did not last. Doma United won the Nigeria National League's Northern Conference A2 to reach the Nigeria Professional Football League for the first time in 2022/23, then went straight back down. Goalkeeper Kingdom Osayi kept 12 clean sheets the following season as the club worked to return, and the return came in 2024/25, when Doma United won NNL Conference C and beat Mighty Jets FC 2-0 to book their place back in the NPFL for 2025/26.

Locally, they are still known as The Savannah Tigers .
