EC Hannover

Fedor Rose was a refugee from Silesia when he put together the Eissportgesellschaft Hannover in May 1948, and it is that founding the club still counts from, even though the entity playing today is a different one. The line between the two runs through two bankruptcies: the original club, having become RESG Hannover, then EC Hannover, then EC in Hannover, folded in 1984 and was refounded; a second collapse followed in 1998, after a spell in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga as a founding member and a rebrand as the Hannover Turtles. What kept skating was the Kleefelder Eissport Verein, which set up the Hannover Indians that same year and has carried the name EC Hannover Indians since 2006.

The Indians' best-remembered season has nothing to do with any of that upheaval: in 2001/02 they won all 48 games they played in the Regionalliga. Promotion to the 2. Bundesliga followed in 2009, and when insolvency threatened again in 2013, it was the supporters who kept the club going.

Across the city, the Hannover Scorpions wait every season for the City Derby. The games are still played at the Eisstadion am Pferdeturm, a ground built in 1959 — the same rink the club has skated on through every name it has carried.
