Dieter Hegen took charge of Füchse Duisburg in the mid-2000s: seven national titles as a player and a place in the IIHF Hall of Fame. Hegen had got Duisburg there in the first place, leading the promotion that took the club into the DEL for the 2005 season.

The team's roots go back to 1971, when the first senior side of DSC Kaiserberg played its opening match in Duisburg. The name changed repeatedly after that — through DSC Eishockey, DSV 87, EV Duisburg — before Füchse Duisburg was settled on in 2004. Long before any of the renaming, in 1980, the club became the first German side to tour Canada for friendlies.

Promotion has been the club's recurring plot: the 2. Bundesliga-Nord in 1978/79, the Oberliga in 1999/00, the 2. Bundesliga title in 2000/01 that first opened the door to the DEL.

The Foxes play in front of 3,800 at the alleato ARENA, and in 2025 they returned to the DEL.
