When Elverum take the pitch against Kolstad, locals call it "storkampen" — the big match.
The men's team only took its own name in 1995, when the handball section split off from Elverum Idrettslag, the parent club founded in 1892; two years later a further division separated men's, women's and youth handball, and Elverum Håndball settled into the identity it still carries. The yellow and black kit is a straight inheritance from Idrettslag.
Terningen Arena, built next to the Terningmoen military camp, holds 2,500.
Europe has offered tougher lessons. Elverum's furthest run in the European Handball Federation's Champions League (EHF Champions League) ended in the round of sixteen in 2021/22, where Paris Saint-Germain proved too strong. Christian Berge coached the club before taking charge of the Norwegian national team.
None of that was visible on 14 May 1946, when 26 handball enthusiasts gathered at Gråberg in Elverum and elected Alf Arnesen their first chairman.
