Fram Women

Reykjavik's Úlfarsárdalur valley grew as a residential district on the eastern edge of the capital, and it was there, in 2022, that Fram's handball players finally got a home of their own after years at Safamýri Hall: Íþróttamiðstöð Fram, a hall built for 1,300 spectators. The section itself dates back further than the ground does, to 1940, and it took the team known as Framkonur only five seasons to reach the top flight of Icelandic women's handball.

Once there, they barely left it. Framkonur have taken the Úrvalsdeild kvenna title 23 times, and on to more recent wins in 2013, 2017, 2018 and 2022. The cup record sits alongside it: fifteen wins, the first in 1978 and the most recent in 2018.

Karen Knútsdóttir ran the side from central back for years and won 106 caps for Iceland before retiring in 2025, a career that spanned much of the club's most recent title-winning period. Þórey Rósa Stefánsdóttir, on the right wing, was named Iceland's Player of the Year in 2018.

None of it carries the weight of a match against Valur. The two clubs meet in what is simply called the Reykjavík derby, a fixture with no love lost between neighbours who have spent decades trading the same trophies back and forth.
