Grotta Women

Gróttuhús sits at Suðurströnd, and it is where Grotta's handball section has built whatever history it has. The club around it, Íþróttafélagið Grótta, was founded in 1967 by Garðar Guðmundsson, and the women's handball team plays in blue and yellow under a nickname, Gróttukonur.

That changed across the 2014–15 and 2015–16 seasons, when Grotta won back-to-back Icelandic championships and, in between, the national cup. The team that did it scored heavily and often: Sunna María Einarsdóttir finished the 2015–16 campaign with 113 goals in 22 games, with Eva Björk Davíðsdóttir not far behind on 90.

The years since have not repeated that run. Grotta went down to the second tier after the 2018–19 season, came back up through the promotion playoffs in 2023–24 with a win over Afturelding, and were relegated again at the end of 2024–25, sending them back into the 1. deild kvenna for 2025–26. Stjarnan, from neighbouring Garðabær, and Valur, from Reykjavík, remain the names that matter most when Grotta are drawing up a fixture list, though nothing about those meetings carries a derby name of its own.

Anna Úrsúla Guðmundsdóttir was part of both title wins as a player and stayed on inside the club afterwards as assistant coach.
