Vikingur Women

Sara Björg Davíðsdóttir wears the black and yellow of Víkingur's handball side today, decades after the club's women last stood at the top of Icelandic handball. That peak came in the early 1990s, when the team took the Úrvalsdeild kvenna title three years running, in 1992, 1993 and 1994, and paired it with two Icelandic Cups. The 1992 final against FH went 19:14; two years later, against ÍBV, the margin was a single goal, 19:18.

The department itself dates to 1938, thirty years after the wider club took shape in Reykjavík, and it took until 1945 for a women's side to enter the first city championship. That slower start makes the run of titles in the nineties stand out more, not less — a department built from nothing reaching the summit within a generation.

Since then the team has settled into the Grill66 deild kvenna, the second tier, and its fixtures against Valur, Fram and KR still carry the weight of the Reykjavík Derby, the kind of local meeting where history between the sides adds an edge regardless of league position. Games are played at Víkin, the indoor hall the club has called home since 1991.

The men's side has its own reference point from the same stretch of decades: Guðmundur Guðmundsson, who played there from 1979 to 1992. On the women's team now, it is Sara Björg Davíðsdóttir, alongside Hildur Guðjónsdóttir, who carries that history forward, with Valgerður Elín Snorradóttir among the younger players already capped for Iceland at Under-17 level.
