Priestfield Stadium sits where it has always sat, on the same patch of ground the club has occupied since it first took to a pitch, and its 11,582 seats now hold a fraction of what the old open terraces once did. It has outlasted the name over its own gates: the team that plays there started out as New Brompton, and only after a board decision in 1912, confirmed by shareholders the following year, did Gillingham F.C. take the field under the name it carries now.

The club was founded in 1893. Its honours board runs thin by design rather than neglect — two Fourth Division titles, in 1963–64 and again in 2012–13, separated by nearly half a century, plus a Southern League double in the late 1940s before the club had reached the Football League's higher tiers at all. The nearest brush with a major cup came in 1998, when Gillingham lost the FA Trophy final to Bromley after extra time; two more Football League Trophy finals, against Bristol Rovers and Brentford in the mid-2000s, ended the same way. The best league placing came in 2002–03, an 11th-place finish in the second tier during a five-year spell there that started with a play-off win over Wigan Athletic in 2000 and ended in relegation in 2005.

Two names carry the weight of the badge. Steve Bruce played 237 games in blue between 1979 and 1984 before going on to captain Manchester United and England. Tony Cascarino's route to Priestfield ran through a Kent amateur side, Crockenhill, whose price for him was reportedly a tracksuit; he went on to score for Ireland and later for Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Marseille. Ron Hillyard's 655 appearances over 17 years remain the club record.

Distance has never dampened the club's oldest rivalry: Swindon Town, roughly 80 miles off, became a fixture to dread after crowd trouble in the late 1970s, including a tunnel brawl in 1979, and matches between the two still draw extra policing. Closer to home, games against Chatham Town are known simply as the Medway Derby, both clubs sharing that stretch of Kent. Gillingham currently play in League Two, chasing the kind of promotion push that last worked in 2013.
