Gloucester City

The team traces back to March 1883, though the original Gloucester club folded in 1910; what survived was a side started as Gloucester YMCA, which took the name Gloucester City in 1925 and kept it.

The club's high point came on a winter afternoon in 1951-52, when 10,500 people packed into the ground to watch Gloucester beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in the FA Cup, Stan Myers among the scorers and a young Alf Ramsey playing for the visitors. Nothing since has quite matched that crowd or that name on the scoresheet, though a run to the second round in 1989-90 under Brian Godfrey, drawing with Cardiff City before losing the replay, came close in spirit.

Money trouble shadowed the club for years, through a collapse in 1991 and debts in the mid-1990s that the local businessman Keith Gardner cleared, buying the team a run since remembered as its glory years, when Dale Watkins, Adie Mings and David Holmes formed the attack under Leroy Rosenior. Water did more lasting damage than any creditor: Meadow Park flooded in December 2000 and again in July 2007, when eight feet of water covered the pitch, and Gloucester City spent thirteen years playing away from home, at grounds including Forest Green Rovers and Cheltenham Town, before a rebuilt, flood-resistant Meadow Park reopened in 2020.

Cheltenham Town remain the club's closest rival, the two meeting in what is known locally as the Golden Valley derby. Michael Duff, now the club's manager, started his career at Gloucester City before it took him elsewhere and brought him back. Meadow Park holds 4,000, a few hundred of them seated, and it is there, on ground the Severn has twice tried to reclaim, that The Tigers now play again.
