Highlanders

When Highlanders meet Dynamos, the fixture goes by the name Battle of Zimbabwe, and what it carries has never been confined to the pitch: the Bulawayo club has stood for Ndebele identity since its beginnings. The nearer quarrel is smaller in scale and shorter in distance — Chicken Inn, from the same city, in what Bulawayo calls its derby.

The club came out of the household of Lobengula: his grandsons founded it in 1926. Two of its names survive from that period and neither is decorative. Bosso, from Setswana slang for "the boss", is the one printed on scarves; Amahlolanyama, the grey-crested helmet-shrike, refers to the black and white the team has always played in.

Seven league titles sit against the name, but the ones that matter are the four taken in a row between 1999 and 2002, first under Rahman Gumbo and then under Eddie May. The eight Chibuku Super Cups run from 1973 to 2019, which is a longer span than the league record and a thinner one.

Barbourfields, known in the city as Emagumeni, holds 40,000.

The name that travels furthest is Peter Ndlovu, who left Bulawayo and became the first African to play in the English Premier League.
