The Under-20 side qualifies through the AFC U-20 Asian Cup preliminaries rather than at home; 16 appearances at the finals from 42 editions since 1959, and none of the recent ones. Home friendlies, when they happen, go to the Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground, which holds 5,000.

The team's peak came early: bronze at the 1963 AFC U-20 Asian Cup, four wins, a draw and a single defeat, 17 goals scored against six conceded. Nothing from the modern era matches that run.

The Football Association of Hong Kong, China, which fields the side, dates to 1914; the youth team itself carries no separate founding year, since it exists as an age-bracket selection rather than a standing club. It wears the senior team's colours, red at home and white away, and its badge is the same Chinese dragon crest. The nickname Cockroaches also passes down from the senior side rather than belonging to the under-20s alone.

Yue Tze Nam is remembered by name: he came through this level before going on to captain the senior Hong Kong team in 2026.
