Karlovy Vary

The club traces back to 1932, when it was formed in Karlovy Vary as SK Slavia Karlovy Vary, and its name kept shifting with its backers for decades afterward — Slavia Becherovka, then simply Becherovka — before a sponsorship deal with Sokolovská uhelná turned it into HC Energie in 2002.

The single Extraliga title came in 2008–09, and it did not come easily: down 0–3 to HC Sparta Praha in the deciding sixth game, Karlovy Vary clawed back to win 4–3 at home, with Lukáš Pech scoring the goal that settled it. A runner-up finish had come the year before. Almost a decade later the club went the other way: losing Sokolovská uhelná as sponsor forced relegation to the 1. Liga in 2017, and it took just one season to win promotion straight back.

Petr Kumstát built his reputation there across 484 games, finishing with 333 points, and Václav Skuhravý remains the club's leading scorer of the Extraliga era and a former captain. Tomáš Vokoun, a Karlovy Vary native, came home to play for the club during the 2012–13 NHL lockout. Games against HC Škoda Plzeň are known as the Západočeské derby.

Since the 2009–10 season the team has played at the Mattoni Arena, a rink holding just under 6,000, in Karlovy Vary.
