The women's side plays its home matches under the SG 09 name, drawing on a men's Bundesliga cooperation with MT Melsungen since 2005.

The gymnastics club itself dates to 1909, but handball for women only began there in 1966, when chairman Fritz Gießler and department head Hans Schomberg set it up and brought in Karl Kuppstadt as the first coach. The Kuppstadt sisters, Marianne and Karla, were part of that breakthrough side, playing alongside Sigrid Weber and Rosi Müller.

A second promotion to the top flight came in 2004 after winning the 2. Bundesliga Süd, but two seasons were enough before the club dropped back down. Since then it has settled into a rhythm of the 2. Bundesliga and the 3. Liga, going up in 2008, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2023 and 2025 and coming back down just as often.

Locally, the fixture that matters is against HSG Bad Wildungen Vipers, the club's recognised rival in North Hesse.
