Mainz Frauen have won the 3. Liga Süd twice, in 2021-22 and again in 2025-26, and both times turned down the promotion that came with it.

The women's section traces back to 2007, when the handball departments of TSG 1846 Mainz-Bretzenheim and DJK Moguntia Bretzenheim merged into a joint operation, SG Mainz-Bretzenheim, fielding a side under the banner of 1. FSV Mainz 05. That arrangement was dissolved in 2023, TSG 1846 Mainz-Bretzenheim went back to running its own handball department, and the Mainz 05 team carried on separately.

Local dialect gave the club its nickname, Meenzer Dynamites — "Meenzer" being simply "from Mainz" — worn in blue and white. The side reached the 1. Bundesliga for the first time in 2019, then dropped back out after the 2020-21 season.

Derby day in Mainz pits the club against TSG 1846 Mainz-Bretzenheim, the side it once shared a handball department with. Head coach Ilka Fickinger builds her team around playmaker Larissa Platen, with Saskia Wagner wearing the captain's armband.

One season is all Mainz Frauen have spent in Germany's top flight since the club was formed.
