Zanzibar City runs on trade routes and customs checkpoints.
Domestically, KMKM has stood alongside Mlandege as one of the two clubs that decide where the Zanzibar Premier League title goes. KMKM's own list of league titles runs from 1984 through to 2013 and 2014, with a Tanzanian Cup won three times in the late 1970s and early 1980s, a period when the club also reached the quarter-finals of the African Cup Winners' Cup.
Continental football has been an occasional rather than a constant presence: appearances in the CAF Champions League stretch from 1985 to as recently as the 2023/24 campaign, interrupted by long gaps, and a single run in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2011. Players such as Hassan Mbwana Hassan passed through KMKM before moving on to mainland clubs like Young Africans or Simba.
