Fourteen league titles is a number no other side in Libya can match, and the run behind it started in 1963–64 and stretched, through coups, wars and long stretches of exile from home soil, all the way to 2025. Al Ahli Tripoli built that record while playing seasons out of Benghazi's Martyrs of Benina Stadium or across the border in Tunisia, whenever fighting in the capital made Tripoli International Stadium too dangerous to use. The nickname that stuck, Club of the Century, was earned in those conditions rather than in comfort.
The club grew out of the Umar al-Mukhtar Association before its football section was formally registered on 19 September 1950. Green and white have carried the shirt since, though the wider sports club also fields teams in black and yellow.
One continental run stands apart from the rest. In 1984, Al Ahli reached the final of the African Cup Winners' Cup, only to withdraw over the political rupture between Libya and Egypt following the assassination of Anwar Sadat; the trophy went to Al Ahly Cairo by default, a decision made off the pitch rather than on it. More than three decades later, in 2016–17, the club became the first Libyan side to reach the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League, and in 2022 it pushed on to the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup before Orlando Pirates ended the run.
Local rivalry runs through the Tripoli Derby against Al Ittihad Tripoli, a fixture that turned violent in June 2025 when fans stormed the pitch and set the team bus alight. The other fault line, against Al Ahli Benghazi, splits along the country's west-east divide rather than a shared postcode.
Twenty-four major honours sit in the cabinet: fourteen league titles, seven Libyan Cups, three Libyan Super Cups.
