Kusnacht

Ice hockey in Küssnacht am Rigi grew out of a small lakeside town's need for a place to skate, and by 1978 that pastime had enough structure behind it to become the Küssnachter Schlittschuh-Club. The name still carries the old word for skating rather than hockey, a trace of what the club was before it settled into competitive league play. It has spent most of its life in the lower tiers of Swiss hockey, well below the clubs that fill the headlines, and has made peace with that position rather than chasing past it.

The one campaign people still bring up is 2017–18, when KSC won the Division 3 title and went up to the 1. Liga. It was not a dominant club suddenly arriving; it was a small-town side that had put together, for one season, a squad good enough to finish top of its group. Two decades earlier, in 1998–99, the same pattern had played out a level lower, with promotion from Division 4. Neither run turned into a sustained climb, and KSC settled back into the leagues where it has spent most of its history.

That history is punctuated more by upsets than by titles. In the 2023–24 Swiss Cup, KSC beat SC Herisau, a first-division side, 3-2 — the kind of result that means little in a league table but a great deal in a town this size. Locally, the fixture that matters is against EHC Luzern, played out as the Zentralschweizer Eishockey-Derby, a reminder that central Switzerland has more than one club worth watching. Home games are played at the Rigihalle, a rink that holds 1,000, in front of a crowd that has watched this club stay exactly what it set out to be.

No player from Küssnacht has gone on to make a name elsewhere; the club has stayed a place people play for the town, not a step toward somewhere bigger. That, more than any single result, is what keeps the Rigihalle occupied on a Saturday night.
