The academy that produced André Schürrle sits inside a club that began on 16 March 1905 as 1. Mainzer Fussballclub Hassia 1905. Schürrle went from that system to a World Cup winner's medal in 2014; Loris Karius and Erik Durm came out of the same intake years.

The German U19 Championship has come to Mainz twice, and both finals ran the same way: Borussia Dortmund beaten 4–2 after extra time, first in 2009, then again in 2023.

The 2023 title carried the side into the UEFA Youth League as German champions, and they reached the quarter-finals in 2023–24 before going out. The DFB Junioren Pokal has never come their way.

Two derbies matter here. 1. FC Kaiserslautern brings the Pfalz Derby; Eintracht Frankfurt brings the Rhein-Main-Derby.
