Mariestad

Mariestad sits on the shore of Lake Vänern, a market town in Västra Götaland where winters bite hard enough to keep an ice rink busy long after the harbour freezes over. Hockey has been the town's export since 1947, when a group of enthusiasts founded Mariestad CK Hockey; twenty years later the section folded into the multi-sport Mariestads BoIS, taking its colours of blue, yellow and red along with it.

The name did not survive 1998. Debts sank the parent club that year, and the hockey side had to start again from nothing, first as Mariestads HC, then reclaiming the BoIS name once the finances allowed it. Supporters still call the team Oxarna, the Oxen, a nickname that has outlasted the bankruptcy and every restructuring since.

The closest Mariestad came to the top flight was the 1983/84 season, when they reached the qualification playoffs for Elitserien and ran into HV71. A quarter-century later they briefly reached HockeyAllsvenskan, the second tier, in 2008/09, but finished bottom and dropped straight back down. Since then the club has settled into HockeyEttan, the third tier, where it has won its division five times, most recently in 2021/22.

What the town notices more than results is who comes through the academy. Tommy Samuelsson left Mariestad for a career that earned him a place in the Swedish Hockey Hall of Fame, and Sebastian Collberg went on to be drafted into the NHL. Every meeting with Skövde AIK carries a separate name, Slaget om Skaraborg, the Battle for Skaraborg, and draws a crowd that fills a fair share of Katrinhallen's 2,550 seats.
