Mets

The Mets exist because those trains stopped running for two of them: the Dodgers and the Giants left for California after 1957.

Nobody expected much. The first Mets team went 40-120, one of the worst records the majors have seen, playing out of the Polo Grounds before Shea Stadium opened in 1964. The run to that 1969 World Series, won over the Baltimore Orioles under Gil Hodges, is the reason the club still answers to "the Amazin' Mets." The 1986 team added a second title against the Boston Red Sox, a series remembered less for the trophy than for Game 6 and Bill Buckner's error, which turned a Boston win into a Mets Game 7.

Tom Seaver anchored the pitching through the early years until the 1977 trade that sent him to Cincinnati, a deal bitter enough at the time that it is still known as the Midnight Massacre. David Wright, who came up through the organisation and stayed for his whole career, ended it as the franchise's all-time hits leader.

Since 2009 the club has played at Citi Field, seating close to 42,000.
