The franchise itself began further south. Frank Farrell and Bill Devery bought the rights to the defunct Baltimore Orioles franchise for $18,000 on 9 January 1903 and moved it to New York, where it played as the Highlanders before adopting the name Yankees in 1913.

What followed is the most decorated run in the sport: 27 World Series titles, the earliest in 1923, the most recent in 2009, spread across eras defined by different men in the same uniform. Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak, set in 1941, remains the mark by which a hot streak in baseball is measured. Derek Jeter closed out the era that began with DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle before him.

The current Yankee Stadium, seating 46,537, opened in April 2009 across the street from the original, replacing rather than renovating it — the old ground came down soon after. Navy blue and white have stayed constant through all of it, on a franchise the league itself dates to 1903.

No fixture carries the weight of the games against the Boston Red Sox.
