The rivalry with the Chicago White Sox runs deeper than the standings. The franchise itself started somewhere else entirely, taking the field in 1901 as the Washington Senators , one of the American League's eight founding clubs, and it took a World Series title in 1924 before settling into decades the club's own history remembers plainly as time spent at the bottom of the league.
The move came in 1961, when the team relocated to Minnesota and adopted the Twins name as a nod to the paired cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Nothing that followed matched what Tom Kelly built in the late 1980s: the second of them in 1991, when Kirby Puckett forced a Game 6 with a home run that is still replayed every October and Jack Morris followed it with ten shutout innings in Game 7 against the Atlanta Braves.
Hall of Famers have worn the uniform in the meantime, among them Rod Carew and Harmon Killebrew , and the current roster carries forward its own line through players like Byron Buxton . Target Field, home since 2010, holds a little over 38,000.
