Chicago has worn the black jersey across town from the White Sox since the American League named itself a major league in 1901. The Guardians series carries more recent weight, sharpened by division meetings and playoff runs that put both clubs in the same October picture more than once.
Detroit's own charter membership in that 1901 league is the plainer distinction: no other American League club has stayed in its founding city under its founding name as long as the Tigers have.
Ty Cobb played into that early era.
None of it traces to Comerica Park, which only opened in 2000. The Tigers were already a club with pennants and a rival across Chicago before that ground existed, having started out in 1894 in the minor Western League, seven years before the American League declared itself major and made Detroit a charter member.
