Mineros Potosi

Club Deportivo Mineros Potosí took its identity from the work that has shaped its city for centuries. Potosí grew up around silver and tin extraction, and the districts around its mines gave the club both its following and its name: Los Mineros, a nickname that points directly at the pits rather than at any founder or benefactor.

The club plays at the Estadio Víctor Agustín Ugarte, in the San Clemente zone of the city, a ground that has carried at least two other names over the years — Mario Mercado Vaca Guzmán and, informally, San Clemente itself. It holds around 29,000 people, sizeable for a club that has spent much of its recent history outside Bolivia's top flight.

That top flight has belonged in Potosí to others. Real Potosí is the club that has actually won the national championship, and the "Clásico Minero" nickname sits with a different fixture entirely, against San José de Oruro. Mineros Potosí measures itself instead against Nacional Potosí, the crosstown rival in the Clásico Potosino, a derby fought mostly in the second tier rather than under the lights of the Primera División.

That changed in 2024, when Mineros Potosí won the Copa Simón Bolívar, the competition that functions as Bolivia's second division, and with it the right to play in the Primera División the following season. For a club that had spent years working through the regional Primera A Potosí simply to qualify for that second-tier tournament, promotion marked the clearest measure of progress it has produced. It now has to hold that place among Bolivia's top sides.
