Ohrid

Handball in Ohrid did not begin with the club that carries the name today. It began with Elektromontazha, the company that put its own team on the court in 1972 and turned it, for a decade, into one of the strongest sides in the country, taking the national title in 1977, 1978 and 1983. When the company's finances gave way in the early 2000s, the club went with them.

It took local players, coaches and sports officials until 2011 to bring the game back to the city, first under the name RK Ohrid 2011, then RK Ohrid 2013. The team worked its way up through the First Macedonian Handball League and reached the Super League for the 2013/14 season, finishing seventh in the regular season before going on a run to second place in the playoffs. In 2018 it took its current name, GRK Ohrid, with Boris Rojević on the bench and Risto Kitevski as president.

The club reached the semi-finals of the Macedonian Cup in 2016/17 and had already tested itself in Europe, going out of the EHF Cup to Porto in the second round in 2017/18. The breakthrough came decades after Elektromontazha's last title, when GRK Ohrid beat the Hungarian side MOL Tatabánya KC over two legs to win the EHF European Cup, an aggregate victory built on a strong away performance before the tie was closed out at home. The EHF opened an investigation into racist abuse aimed at Tatabánya's French player during that second leg in Ohrid.
