Opava

Opava's sharpest fixture runs against HC RT TORAX Poruba, from across the region in Ostrava, a meeting known locally as the Moravian-Silesian Derby; a second, older grudge is kept with HC Tatra Kopřivnice. The club that plays those games today is not the one that first took the ice in Opava. That was Troppauer EV, a German side founded in 1908 that reached the Czechoslovak Extraliga before the war. When the German population was expelled after 1945, the club was refounded on 8 November that year as a Czech institution, HC Slezan Opava.

Its one season among the elite came after winning the 1. Liga, the second tier, in 1995/96, which sent the team, then playing under owner Radim Masný as HC Bohemex Trade Opava, into the Extraliga for three years. That run ended in 1999, when Masný sold the top-flight licence to HC Havířov, dropping Opava back down the pyramid. The club stopped competing altogether in 2005, after relegation from the 1st League, and did not return until 2007; it now plays in the Second National Hockey League, the third tier. Martin Filip led the Extraliga scoring charts in 1996-97 with 38 points, the high point of that short spell at the top.

The team took the black and yellow it now wears only in August 2026, replacing the red, yellow and white it had carried for years, alongside a new shield crest built from two crossed sticks forming an S. Their home, the Zimní stadion Opava, opened in 1954 and was roofed two years later, making it the oldest covered rink still used for hockey in the country; a reconstruction that ran from 2023 reopened the building on 25 September 2026. Capacity now stands at 2,000, down from the 5,500 it held before the rebuild.
